The Food Exchange – 3 years??!! Let’s celebrate with chocolate cake!

This month 3 years ago Lucy and I started our project called “The Food Exchange”. I actually had to double check if it has really been three years already because I couldn’t believe it. But it really is true – and a lot has happened in the meantime:
We both had a baby, bought a house and traveled quite a bit (mainly between Germany and England). It truly has been an exciting 3 years.
And amongst all the things happening we kept on doing the Food Exchange. And I can say for myself that I absolutely love it…I have baked so many things that I otherwise would never have made and I can honestly say that I am looking forward to it every single month.
Apart from that – and more importantly – I have found an amazing friend Lucy. Funnily enough we have never met in person (although I can’t wait to finally do this), but have become friends through writing messages to each other…almost old-fashioned like a letter friend ;).

Anyway, obviously this month had to be a Birthday theme and Lucy asked me to make a chocolate cake, and believe it or not I have never made a typically English chocolate cake before…

The Food Exchange – Enjoy your picnic with Scotch Eggs

The weather last weekend was perfect for a picnic – and although we didn’t go far, the little picnic in our garden was soooo good!
As you may have gathered by now – this months Food Exchange theme is…. PICNIC :).

Lucy’s challenge for me this month was to make Scotch Eggs. Another challenge that was absolutely new to me – and this is exactly what I love so much about our project!

The Food Exchange – Pound Cakes…a quick and easy Lemon Drizzle Cake

I am so excited! After a 6-month-long break Lucy from Lucya bakes and myself are back with our monthly Food Exchange!
Our break had an incredibly adorable reason: the birth of Lucy’s son…sweet little Noah. Congratulations again, Lucy! Noah is such a beautiful little boy!

So, as you can see, there was a good excuse for our break 🙂 …and now we’re ready to continue baking. I really have to say I missed our little challenge because it is just so much fun and it makes me go out of my comfort zone and try out new cakes and bakes!

As Lucy and I are quite busy at the moment we chose cakes that are quick and easy to bake – we went for pound cakes. Lucy told me to make a Lemon Drizzle Cake – so here we go :)…

The Food Exchange – Breakfast

Today Lucy from www.lucyabakes.com and I are back with the monthly Food Exchange – the theme is Breakfast. If you haven’t read about Lucy’s and my Food Exchange, please have a look here where you can find all the details and recipes we tried out before.
This month Lucy’s suggestion for me was making Crumpets.
Before I moved to England I had never heard of Crumpets…but after trying then I immediately discovered that they are super, super delicious!

Crumpets are toasted and then eaten with butter, that melts in the pores of this tasty and quite fluffy flour and yeast bake. I always thought making them must be quite difficult, so I never gave it a try – for me they were one of these things that you buy every now and then, but that you never really consider making yourself.
When Lucy suggested this bake to me and I looked at the recipe I couldn’t wait to give it a try because it actually sounded more than doable to me.

The Food Exchange – Baking with children

I love baking with kids and I still remember some of my first bakes and how proud I was.
When Lucy and I thought about a Food Exchange topic for this month I think we both remembered our own childhood and how great it was to get to know the world of baking.
Lucy told me about one of the first things she ever baked: Cornflakes cakes – and I told her about the first cake I ever made: Fanta cake. Fanta cake obviously doesn’t taste of Fanta or Lemonade but it is really tasty and moist and all the measurements are in mugs, so there is no weighing involved.
Cornflakes cakes are just as easy to make and there are soooo delicious! They don’t even need to be baked and I am convinced that kids love the mess when everything is mixed together 🙂

The Food Exchange – Cheesecake

When Lucy and I were looking for a new Food-Exchange-topic we realized in all these months we’ve never baked Cheesecakes – well, at least in Germany Cheesecake is one of THE cakes so we of course didn’t want to miss out on this.
I gave Lucy a traditional German recipe and she suggested a no bake Cheesecake to me. Lucy mentioned that Cheesecake might not be the most traditional cake in England, but that it seems that no bake Cheesecake is more known in England than in Germany. I have the same impression and decided to give it a go.
